Cowden-Herrick, IL-(Effingham Radio)- On January 26, seven members of the South Central FFA took part in Section 19’s public speaking career development event, held at Cowden-Herrick High School. This competition offers FFA members the opportunity to develop agricultural leadership and aims to provide the opportunity for personal growth and top-notch leadership by improving the speaking skills of participating students.

Violet Elledge and Wyatt Iler participated in the Creed Speaking section, where they are required to memorize and speak the FFA creed, and be judged on its delivery. Violet Elledge placed 2nd, individually, and will advance to district competition. Haley Shuler competed in the junior college prepared public speaking contest and Kyla Engel competed in the college prepared public speaking contest. Prepared public speaking asks students to choose an agriculture-related topic, write, and deliver a 6-8 minute speech on the topic. Haley Shuler placed 1st and will move on to district competition. Improvised Public Speaking asks participants to write a 4-6 minute speech, on a random agricultural topic, in 35 minutes, memorize it and present it in front of judges. Morgan Robb competed in the Junior Varsity Extemporaneous Public Speaking contest, placed 1st and will move on to the district contest. Brandt Hiestand and Dennis Wollin competed in the Varsity Extemporaneous Public Speaking section, where Dennis Wollin placed 1st, and will also advance to the district competition.
