Public communication is important for an institution to have a voice in society. The 47 county governments are no exception. A county government needs better direct communication and partnership with communities. They must encourage meaningful participation in governance by all citizens. This initiative requires transparency, coordinated, timely and accurate information provided to citizens.

What seems to be lacking in most counties is the ability to authentically express their accomplishments to citizens in a clear and succinct manner. Since decentralization is a new concept, county communications experts must take advantage of it to fill the information gap.

1. Plan good customer service; because your customers are people who need services. People face obstacles to reach the county council on the waste dumped on the road. They are the reason you have a job. Communicate effectively with them. Please get rid of the “old Kanjo image ”and break down the information bureaucracy. Give fair and equal treatment to all. Be understanding of people with special needs.

2. Build a sustainable communication framework. This includes centralizing the coordination of communications to a unit. Develop county communication policies. The policy document establishes general rules and principles for communication. Clarity of policies and procedures regarding the use of social media and other emerging technologies is crucial. Also, separate communication and social media policies. Train county staff to produce consistent and quality communications with the public. The training improves the skills required to initiate and produce consistently professional and quality communications. Deploy a cohesive image through the use of the county logo and other branding techniques.

3. Expanding the reach of the county. Make good use of traditional media channels to propel your agenda. Also use new media technologies. Keep the public informed through social media sites like Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Develop strategies for social media and website. The ongoing review of the website should not be ignored. Make your website interesting and juicy. A heavily populated web page is a reprimand. Take advantage of community programs, live interviews, scheduled media updates and project launch. Fully improve transparency and access to information throughout the life of any county project.

4. Develop proactive communication. Establish effective administrative processes to prioritize projects, deliver consistent messages across departments, and track results. To confidently tell a country’s story and solve controversial projects or issues, a more focused approach is recommended. This is where interdepartmental support and planning of targeted communication projects comes in handy. This can only be done with the framework developed and the use of the most appropriate media channels. Remember that communication takes into account the greatest human needs: respect, appreciation, belonging and worth. All of this has followed, your county will have an informed population that actively participates in the governance affairs of the company.
