What defines public speaking?
Public speaking generally refers to an individual speaking to a live audience in a formal setting without interruption. This form of interpersonal communication is a fundamental skill for all leaders. Knowing what to say and how to say it may seem simple, but the ability to organize, write, and deliver speeches is something most adults aren’t comfortable with. Introducing young people to public speaking as early as possible is essential to help them become confident communicators.
The Flagler County 4-H Youth Development Program offers several opportunities for youth to participate in such projects. For existing Flagler County 4-H members, there will be an opportunity to participate in county events in February. At county events, members ages 8-18 can speak on any 4-H topic. This competition provides a space for young people to express their ideas effectively with confidence and confidence. For members who may have something to present that needs visual aids (posters, models, etc.), there is also a contest at County Events specifically for demonstrations and pictorial lectures. Any of these can provide opportunities for young people to progress and compete at district and state level events. Please speak to your Club Manager or County 4-H Agent for more information on these opportunities.
Another opportunity offered through Flagler County 4-H is the Florida 4-H Public Speaking Program powered by Florida Power & Light Company (FPL), formerly known as the Tropicana Public Speaking Contest. This will be introduced in Flagler County schools in the spring. Participation in the fourth, fifth and sixth year classes will allow students to give a 3 to 5 minute speech on the topic of their choice. This competition is originally held in the classroom and students can advance to competitions at the school and county level.
Whether it’s members of 4-H speaking in public at the club or county level or our academic enrichment programs, 4-H offers a range of opportunities for young people to become communicators. effective. Most importantly, 4-H professionals have tips and tricks to help young people master their public speaking skills.
