Most of us have heard the slogan: “It’s not What you know it’s WHO you know.” Likewise, it is not necessarily What you say. He is How? ‘Or’ What You said it. This is where public speaking comes in handy.

Even when we know we deserve our place in our organization and receive positive feedback confirming our performance, it’s incredibly human to be self-doubt at work. Team meetings can amplify this self-doubt. If we feel inclined to talk about a new idea or interesting new discovery, but no one responds, the lack of enthusiasm can feel like a personal attack on our contributions.

The feeling of insecurity during a meeting, especially when we do not receive the desired response from our peers, can cause some to not speak up in the next meeting. As a result, ruminating inwardly on what others think of us can cause us to hold back our ideas. Fortunately, we can overcome the very human feeling of self-doubt by building up our confidence. By optimizing your public speaking skills, you’ll find that capturing the attention of those around you takes less work than you think.

Tip #1: Take the time to frame the concept of what you would like to share.

It’s hard for a single team member to hold the attention of the room when everyone in a meeting shares the same excitement over an area of ​​interest. Sometimes we feel excited while doubting our authority to capture the attention of the room. In these situations, we might find ourselves speaking too quietly for our peers to hear or too fast for our colleagues to take notes.

Instead, try to announce your contribution before broaching the topic of your idea. These can be phrased in the form of a question, such as “Can we briefly address the policy implications of these market trends?” or “What if the customer prefers option X instead of option Y?”

Ultimately, giving your audience a hint about what you’re going to cover immediately lets the room know that you have something to stick to. By not revealing too much too soon, you also spark the public’s curiosity as to what you will say next. If you want to give your idea an extra boost, try giving your viewpoint a catchy name so your colleagues can hang onto it if they forget a detail or two.

Tip #2: Detail your point of view.

After framing and naming the concept of what you’d like to share, it’s now time to get down to the nitty-gritty of what you’d like to say. But before you go to pages upon pages of your research, consider giving your audience a preview of your proposal. Focus your audience’s point of view by placing a “frame” where you want to draw their attention. Being clear and concise with the details surrounding the heart of your point will ensure your team understands what you are saying and why it is important.

Tip #3: Open the floor to questions, comments and concerns.

Much of the doubt we feel after meetings looms around the unknown. Because we have no idea what others are saying about our contribution, our brain immediately fills that uncertainty with the most negative possibilities imaginable. Alternatively, asking your team for feedback after sharing an idea breaks the fourth wall. By entertaining comments, you empower yourself to receive both criticism and praise in a forum that can confirm your team’s thoughts. This way, you can rest assured knowing that you did everything you could for others around you to be honest with you about what they thought of your ideas.

If you’re worried about not getting feedback even after hosting a discussion, try thinking of a few questions to ask the group. Be specific in your questions, but also be open-minded. For example, you can ask “how many of you also noticed this?” or “when was the last time you had that thought?” This way, anyone listening can contribute without having to think about the “right” thing to say.
