Amazon Web Services is picking up the secure chat app popular with government employees as it pursues more contracts in the public sector.

Amazon acquired the Wickr end-to-end encrypted messaging app, which is popular with government officials and individual users.

Wickr is one of a host of encrypted messaging apps that have popped up over the past decade, along with Signal and Telegram. It has assembled a user base among journalists, government officials, whistleblowers and those concerned about privacy.

The acquisition is specifically made by Amazon Web Services, the company’s cloud computing business that continues to do more government contracts. She currently has thousands of contracts with various government and public sector agencies in the United States and elsewhere.

He is currently filing a lawsuit for the award of a multibillion-dollar cloud services contract by the Pentagon. Microsoft won this contract but Amazon is contest an alleged “bias” in decision making.

The acquisition of Wickr is part of the company’s public procurement strategy.

In a blog post announcing the deal, Stephen Schmidt, chief information security officer of AWS, said the need for secure communication, especially between government employees, during the pandemic and the workplace at a distance “accelerates”.

“With the shift to hybrid work environments, in part due to the Covid-19 pandemic, businesses and government agencies have a growing desire to protect their communications at many remote locations,” he said.

“Wickr’s secure communications solutions are helping businesses and government organizations adapt to this change in their workforce and are a welcome addition to the growing set of collaboration and productivity services that AWS offers to customers and partners. .

Wickr has built up its own government client base with the US Department of Defense using its services. It provides a free version of the app for general users.

No financial terms of the deal were disclosed. Wickr had raised more than $ 70 million from investors.
